On Saturday July 7th, Katlyn and I, along with Bill and Vickie Baker met up with Leigh Cowley and KC Tabor for breakfast at Millcreek Cafe and Eggworks prior to leaving for Deadwood. The first day only took us as far as Alpine, WY because we split the trip into a three day scenic route. We enjoyed some damn good food at the Flying Saddle resort on the first night.
Day 2 was the longest and the toughest, taking a good 12 hours to go from Alpine to Billings, MT via Yellowstone National Park and Beartooth Pass. We dealt with all expected summer temperatures from 100's all the way down to low 60's and wind in Beartooth Pass. Up near the top there was still several feet of snow on the side of the road, making me wonder if it ever melts completely before winter comes around again. By the evening of the second day our little group had already become quite accustomed to hanging in the bar with drinks after having concluded the days riding.
We arrived in Deadwood sans Leigh and KC without incident. Leigh and KC took a detour to go see family and arrived later that evening, but not before having to endure a couple hours of riding in the rain and in the dark, never a good combination.
The event featured several amenities, both Spyder related and otherwise. There were multiple vendors including Squared Away, Spyder1Attitude, Jeff Dastrup Pinstriping, Spyderpops and a few others.
Deadwood itself is a fun little town featuring casinos, saloons and gift shops. Downtown is filled with old style brick building's with brick streets between them. There were many different types of trikes other than Spyders, Harley and Goldwing trikes, Slingshot's, several custom units and a new brand of vehicle built in our own back yard (Provo), a Vanderhall which like the Slingshot, is a three wheeled car but looks like a bullet gliding across the road surface. We decided to hold off on test driving it since they're local, thereby allowing more non-local attendees to take advantage, all of which had smiles on their faces when they got back.
Katlyn will be TEARING UP the streets from this moment forward with a new custom exhaust from Spyder1Attitude! It is a prototype unit with three slash cut outlets coming out the side of the pipe. Now her Spyder has the race car sound to match the race car appearance. I wouldn't ride behind or next to her if I were you!
Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, Mount Rushmore and Devil's Tower are all sights to be seen on anyone's bucket list. Later in the week we hit Sturgis just to see what all the fuss was about, and we're still looking. Sturgis has nothing on Deadwood in the charm department so I really have to wonder why it has been the home of such a high profile motorcycle rally for so many years. However, there is a fabulous motorcycle museum there at the center of town that features the "Million Mile Motorcycle."
For Katlyn and I the big goodbye event was having our Spyders among the chosen vehicles to spell out "D3WR" on a large green grass field for the group picture. We had to leave the next day so we missed out on the closing parade and banquet, but we've already signed up for next year! This event is highly recommended. The coordinator Teresa has her Spyders in a row for sure
